THE BEST TRAVEL INSURANCE FOR PETS: COMPARISON

It's simple. Imagine you take your dog on a trip to France and, for whatever reason, he gets sick. OK, you take him to the vet, just as you would if you were at home, but do you know how much an emergency vet costs? Many of you probably already know that it costs a LOT, and that it is very expensive. Now imagine that outside Spain the standard of living is much higher, so the vet will also be more expensive. If you had taken out pet insurance, you would have been covered for the fright and the worry about the money. For all these reasons, just like us, our pets also need special pet insurance to protect them against the risks that may arise during a trip, whether nationally or internationally.

In order to be able to travel with our pets, the following requirements must be met:

• Your pet must have at least 3 months.
• The maximum number of pets you can travel with is 5.
• Have a microhchip (only for dogs, cats and ferrets). A practical tip is that, in addition to the microchip, you should also carry a tag with your name and a contact number so that, in case of loss, the person who finds it can locate you.
• To travel outside Spain, you must carry the updated passport with all the vaccines and deworming treatments. In the case of the rabies vaccine, the ticket must have been placed 21 days before the trip.
• In case you do not have a passport because you are from outside the European Union, your veterinarian will have to issue you with a health certificate, which will have to be issued 2 weeks prior to travel.
• My recommendation is always to check on the website of every Ministry what are the exact requirements you need to travel with your pet, as the requirements might change.

The most important thing is the veterinary care, where you have included explorations, X-rays, analytics, surgical interventions, special treatments and the repatriation, the ideal travel insurance has to cover both the pet and the owner in case of illness or accident. In addition, for us, the ideal travel insurance has to cover the following points:

• Sacrifice costs: we hope that you will NEVER have to use this cover, but it is always good to have it included for what might happen.
• Advertising costs: imagine your pet is lost, and you need to advertise in the press, on the radio, etc.
• Accommodation costs of the pet after loss: in case your pet is found, and you are unable to pick it up at that moment, your pet's lodging will be covered until you go to pick it up.
• Stay costs of the pet in a residence due to hospitalisation of the owner, in the event that other travellers insured under the policy are unable to take care of the pet.
• Replacement costs of documentation in case of theft or loss of the pet.
• Civil Liability.

For this post I have been researching and comparing many insurances, so it will depend on you, but I have seen prices ranging from 0,54€ per day. But it depends on the dog you have; if you own a PDD it will probably be more expensive or even some companies won't cover them.
