HOW TO TRAVEL WITH YOUR PET BY PLANE 2024?

Antes de nada, tienes que saber que no es lo mismo viajar por la Unión Europea en avión que viajar a Reino Unido o EE. UU., ya que los requisitos son muy diferentes.

TRAVEL ACCESORIES:

We have made a list of accessories that were very useful when we travelled with Snow by plane. We flew from Vigo to Alicante with a stopover in Madrid, which took about 5 hours in total between the flights, the stopover and the check in time. Snow indeed behaved great on both flights, in fact, nobody noticed that he was travelling with a dog, but this is not always the case because some dogs suffer a lot of anxiety. He slept very peacefully and the stewardesses let me put the carrier next to me, as they moved me to a free row, so that we could be more comfortable.

• Carrier: we bought the one sold at Air Europa, but Amazon has 2 carries that look exactly the same.
• Bottle of water: I bought it for Snow when he was very young, and after 2 years, we still have the same bottle. Ours is this, but you have more options on Amazon which are also similar and with different colours.
• WipesSnow peed in Barajas from nervousness, so I had to clean his pee with the wipes. We could give you a link to some wipes, but the best option are the ones from Mercadona. They are cheap, there are lots of them, and they are just as effective as the ones that say "wipes for dogs".
• Harnessthat doesn't chafe. We have been using Curli harnesses with Snow since she came home. We wanted to try the famous K9, and we didn't like the feeling at all, it rubbed his tummy, horrible.
• Dog pads: in our case, Snow was very young when we first travelled with him, so he had to pee more regularly. We recommend you these.
• Short leash: 1.5 metre leash is the best option to keep your dog under control.
• Treats: it is not good to give them food before the flight to prevent them from vomiting or getting dizzy, but some treats always help to reward their good behaviour. We give Snow these which you can buy on Zooplus, and we like them a lot because they are small, fat-free, and you can feed them a lot during the day, so they don't put on weight.
• Toys: their favourite toys, which smell like them and remind them of home. We are going to show you Snow's, but you can buy the ones that best suit your dog. Of course, we recommend you: teddies and those toys where you can put treats inside, so they can entertain themselves during the flight.
• Dry food: if you are going on a trip you have to calculate how much food you need to take with you, as in Europe (let alone the USA) there may not be the food you are giving them, or there may not be a pet shop nearby, or the label may be different (this happens a lot) and you may not know what the right food is. My advice is to put it in an airtight container and carry it in your rucksack or in your own travel bag, such as this we use.
• First aid kit: tweezers to remove ticks, sticking plaster, wound disinfectant, bandages, syringe in case you need to administer any medication, etc. We have this.

Para esto es necesario aclarar varias cuestiones, ya que siempre generan mucha confusión los términos perro de servicio, perro terapia, perro de asistencia y perro de apoyo emocional. Por eso, primero me gustaría aclarar este tema explicando cuál es la función de cada uno. Para ello os he puesto este dibujo que voy a explicar a continuación:

• Perros de servicio: en Europa se llaman perros de asistencia, ya que un perro de servicio aquí se conoce como un tipo de perro de asistencia específico para personas con movilidad reducida. Son perros adiestrados específicamente para mitigar la discapacidad de una persona, ya sea visual, auditiva, física, sensorial o mental. En Estados Unidos puedes adiestrar a tu propio perro para que se convierta en un service dog, puesto que la ley especifica que no es necesario tener un certificado que acredite su condición. Estos perros tienen acceso público y pueden volar junto a su dueño en cabina. En Europa la realidad es muy diferente. Los perros de asistencia son entrenados en centros especiales, con profesionales especializados en adiestrar perros de asistencia.
• Perros de apoyo emocional: no tienen un adiestramiento especial, sino que dan un apoyo y ayuda emocional a su dueño, compañía, pero no han sido adiestrados para comportarse en público ni para realizar ninguna tarea más allá que la de dar apoyo a su dueño. Por lo tanto, solo algunas aerolíneas americanas y latinoamericanas aceptan este tipo de perros, eso sí, bajo unas condiciones muy estrictas.
• Perros de terapia: son perros que reciben un adiestramiento específico para llevar a cabo tareas de apoyo y compañía en centros de mayores, hospitales, etc. También tienen su certificación, pero no tienen ningún tipo de beneficio a la hora de viajar en avión o de acceder a sitios públicos, ya que presta un servicio terapéutico a los demás, no solo a su dueño.

En 2021, Estados Unidos tomó la drástica decisión de dejar de reconocer perros de apoyo emocional. ¿Por qué? Muy fácil. Porque la gente se aprovechó del sistema hasta tal punto que viajaban 10 perros por vuelo, la mayoría no estaban adiestrados y causaban problemas en los vuelos, etc. Era tan fácil como pagarle a un psicólogo, que te hiciera un papel y ya lo tenías todo para poder viajar con tu perro en cabina.

En Latinoamérica podían volar hasta septiembre de 2023 en cabina en algunas aerolíneas, pero la ley ha cambiado y si pesan más de 10 kg tendrán que ir en bodega. En España, tenían la oportunidad de recogerlos en la nueva Ley de Bienestar Animal, pero decidieron dejarlos fuera de nuevo.

Esto es un tema que me enfada basta porque en España llevamos un retraso respecto al resto del mundo importante en este ámbito. Me explico, en Estados Unidos tienes muchas más posibilidades de poder tener un perro de asistencia, mientras que en Europa la cosa es algo más complicada porque no puedes adiestrar a tu perro para que se convierta en perro de asistencia.

En España el problema es que no existe una norma de perros de asistencia común, sino que varía en función de la comunidad. Por ejemplo, en algunas comunidades los perros de alerta médica sí están reconocidos, pero solo para gente con diabetes o epilepsia, para la gente con problemas cardíacos con subidas y bajadas del ritmo cardíaco no. Y esto es un problema para mucha gente.

Nosotros quisimos dar de alta a Snow como perro de asistencia, y en los centros de entrenamiento nos decían que en Galicia la ley es de 2002, por lo que jamás iban a aprobar un perro de servicio para alguien con problemas psiquiátricos en Galicia, ni para discapacidades que no fuesen visuales o físicas (con físicas nos referimos a no poder caminar, que no tengas uno de los brazos o piernas, etc.) Tras A LOT OF investigar, creedme que hemos investigado lo que no está escrito, ¡hemos conseguido certificar a Snow como perro de asistencia!
