One of the most difficult things we have to face dog parents is exactly where to eat. Those of us from Spain know perfectly well how difficult it is because, in many places, dogs are still not allowed. And even less so inside restaurants (they could learn a little from France). That is why, in viajando con perro we are going to help you go to restaurants with your dog.

In this post, we will give you some options about where to eat in Porto with a dog. There are thousands of places where you can taste Portuguese gastronomy at a reasonable price, but you have to know how to look for them, because Porto has become a VERY touristic city in the past years, so the prices are so high. The typical food is: Francesinhas (a sandwich made of sliced bread filled with meat or sausages, covered with cheese and a spicy sauce, to which a fried egg may be added), the cod (sandwich bread filled with meat or sausages, covered with cheese and a spicy sauce to which you can add a fried egg), cod, prepared in different ways, cream cakes, grilled fish... We will also tell you about places with universal food (hamburger, pizza, etc.), because after a hard day of walking, who doesn't fancy a good hamburger?

DOG FRIENDLY RESTAURANTS IN PORTO

We have decided to make two divisions for the restaurants, as we have not been to absolutely all of them and there is not much information on the Internet. In this first section we will tell you which ones we DO know are pet friendly restaurants in Porto.

  • Hard Rock Cafe PortoWe're geeks for this restaurant chain, so every time we visit a city, we check to see if there's a Hard Rock there or not. And in this case, yes, it opened its doors in 2016, so it's been around for a few years now. If you like burgers or other American food, this is the place for you. The ambience is great, the waiters are always super friendly and serve you with a smile. The music, which is the most important thing and what this restaurant chain is known for, is great. The decor is also great, with memorabilia from legendary bands and singers displayed throughout the restaurant. As they say, each one has its own charm and no two are alike. In this case, the one in Porto is very nice, it has 3 floors, the service is great, and we were treated very well as in all of them, and of course we went with Snow, who was treated wonderfully, giving him a great welcome and pampering at all times. Without a doubt a must on all our trips.
  • Casa Ribeiro: We highly recommend this restaurant, as the service was super friendly to us and Snow. It's true that it was a bit slow, but it was worth it. We ordered two pizzas with a drink and they were excellent. It was right next to the hotel (Ibis Centro São Bentoand it was a good choice. The menu is extensive, the pizza is Neapolitan, we loved it. The price is quite good, we paid 28 euros for two pizzas and drinks. They also had traditional Portuguese food, so you can try that too if you feel like it.
  • Soundwich: Located in the park of the city of Oporto. It is a quiet place located in a rural area. The menu offers sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, salads, brunch and churrasco. Dogs can also enjoy a special dish for 4.50 euros. And for a restaurant to have special dishes for pets is a real plus.
  • Playa Bar: Located on Salgueiros beach, in Vila Nova de Gaia. Relaxed atmosphere with sea views.
  • Boa-Bao: Asian restaurant, serving dishes from different oriental countries. If you fancy an Asian lunch or dinner, this is definitely the place for you.
  • Abuela Taberna Bar: It is located in Abuela, in front of the Carlos Alberto Theatre. It is a small and cosy tavern. It is known for its wines, tapas and Portuguese preserves.
  • Base Porto: The bar of the Cordparia Garden. It is right in front of the Clérigos tower. A great place to enjoy tapas and wine. It has become a regular haunt of the Portuguese.
  • Meet Park: Located in the park of the city of Oporto. The esplanade of the park is open to dogs. It has an extensive menu of salads and sandwiches.

  • Honolulu food & coctails: A restaurant with a small, cosy terrace. It has a quiet atmosphere and the service is very attentive. Perfect for a hamburger and a cocktail.
  • A Fábrica Da Picaria: If you like craft beers, accompanied by a francesinha, this is the place for you. The place has two terraces, one inside and one outside. It is a place where you can taste traditional Portuguese dishes, it is located in the centre of Porto.

DODGY RESTAURANTS: PET-FRIENDLY RESTAURANTS IN PORTO

  • Hamburguesería DeGema: We continue with the hamburgers and if you prefer something cheaper than hard rock, we leave you this option. They say that they have the best burgers in Oporto, but that's to your taste... The place is nice and they have quite a variety. They have a lunch menu until 3pm, which for 5,50 euros, you get a hamburger, fries and a drink. We'll stick with the hard rock, it's our weakness, but obviously it's a bit more expensive, that's why we'll show you this option.
  • Lado B café: A little above, we talked about the Francesinha, well, this is one of those places that specialises in it. It is one of the best known in Oporto and if you want to try the most typical dish of Oporto, this is the place to go. The service is great, and the price is quite good, you can have francesinha with chips and a drink for €11. We liked it a lot, it's very good, and you can tell that the ingredients are quality.
Café Santiago: Another restaurant where you can enjoy a good francesinha
  • Zenith: In this case, this restaurant is a "brunch" type of restaurant. We'll recommend a couple of others of this style, but we think this one is pretty good. The price is quite good, as two courses with two drinks cost us around €20. Other recommendations of this style: O Diplomata and Do norte café.
  • Do norte café: As we mentioned in the previous point, Do Norte Café is another place that specialises in brunch. It has a very nice and cosy aesthetic and the price is in the average range.
  • Cruel: The menu is very extensive and well-thought-out. You can eat in the restaurant itself or order takeaway. The price is not bad, usually between 20, €25 per person depending on how greedy you are and whether you order cocktails.
  • Petisqueria Voltaira: This is one of the best restaurants to try the famous Bacalhau a Brás. It consists of a cod casserole, with onions, fried potatoes and egg. They also have francesinhas and all the food is homemade. The price is quite good, about €10 per person. Keep in mind that the place is very small, and they don't take reservations, so go early, it's worth the wait.
  • Casa guedes: A great restaurant to eat in Porto, they offer sandwiches from €3, and they have the option of adding potatoes for a few euros more... They make superb sandwiches, very famous in the city. The restaurant is quite small, but you have the option to go to the other place, as there are two places in Porto, or order the sandwich and eat it outside.
  • Tapabento: One of the best rated restaurants in Oporto. It is fusion food with Portuguese recipes. They deal with fresh and canned products in great detail. Main courses cost around 20 euros, starters between 3 and 13 euros.
  • Folias de Baco: In this case we have an intimate and cosy tavern, where you can order some toasts, a cheese and sausage board accompanied by a good wine. They have a menu that costs 30 euros for two people, but you can choose to your liking by adding vegetarian dishes and others, according to the waiter's suggestions. Of course, the place is usually full, so we recommend booking in advance.
  • Droop food & wine: It's a small and cosy place with modern food, where you can order anything from cod toast to octopus. We recommend the chocolate mousse for dessert, we tried it and it was delicious. As in the previous restaurant, it is advisable to book in advance.
  • Pregar: Located right in the centre of Porto, this is a place to eat well and cheaply. For about 10 euros you can enjoy homemade food such as pregos, a delicious meat sandwich typical of Portugal. The service is quite fast and the staff is very friendly, explaining all the dishes.
  • Fabrica de nata: Since it's not all about lunch and dinner, this place stands out for its breakfasts. If for whatever reason you don't have breakfast at the hotel and it's close by, we recommend you try the typical pastel de nata (cream cakes), very similar to the pastel de Belém in Lisbon. They are crispy puff pastries, filled with homemade cream and sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon, and served freshly baked. The price is quite good: 1 euro a cake and 1,60 € if you add coffee.
  • Taberna San Antonio: It's one of those traditional places that doesn't have a huge menu, but it's very inexpensive and uses quality ingredients. There are different dishes every day. The prices are usually around 5–6 euros per portion, but they are very plentiful, and the desserts are around 2.5 euros and quite good.
  • CongaThe place is famous for its bifana, a pork sandwich that costs just €2. If you have it with your drink, you won't need anything else.
  • Bota & Bira: A good option, as at lunchtime you can choose the dish of the day for 6.50 euros. You can also order tapas, such as patatas bravas, scrambled eggs with ham... The portions are generous. They also have meat dishes and they are quite good.

TRAVEL SAFELY WITH YOUR DOG IN PORTO
